A team of A Level students have earned high praise after securing an impressive third place at the South West Regional Ethics Cup – a remarkable achievement for a first-time entry.

Competing against established teams from across the region, the College’s students demonstrated exceptional critical thinking, teamwork and confidence as they tackled complex ethical issues under pressure. The Ethics Cup challenges participants to analyse real-world moral dilemmas, construct balanced arguments and engage in thoughtful, respectful dialogue – skills that lie at the heart of an outstanding A Level education.

For North Devon College, entering the competition for the first time was an ambitious step. To finish a close third is testament to the students’ dedication, intellectual curiosity and willingness to challenge themselves beyond the classroom. By taking part in high-level competitions such as the Ethics Cup, students gain invaluable experience that strengthens university applications and prepares them for future careers.

Building on this momentum, North Devon College is now exploring plans to host a debate tournament for local secondary schools. The proposed event would provide younger students with the opportunity to develop confidence in public speaking, sharpen their reasoning skills and engage in meaningful discussion on contemporary issues – all within a supportive and inspiring environment.

North Devon College proudly marked Apprenticeship Week 2026 with a vibrant programme of celebration, storytelling and recognition – shining a spotlight on the apprentices and employer partners who are shaping the future workforce across the region.

Throughout the week, the College showcased a series of inspiring case studies, highlighting the real impact apprenticeships have on individuals and businesses alike. Among them were Maisie and Alice at SEA, whose journeys demonstrate how apprenticeships open doors to exciting careers in industry. By combining hands-on experience with academic study, both apprentices are developing valuable technical skills while making meaningful contributions to their organisation.

The College was also delighted to hear directly from leading employer partners including Devon County Council and MOD RMB Chivenor. Their involvement reinforced the vital role apprenticeships play in strengthening local services, supporting economic growth and nurturing talent within North Devon and beyond. These partnerships continue to provide learners with high-quality training, mentorship and progression opportunities in a wide range of sectors.

A key highlight of the week was the celebration of this year’s Apprenticeship Award winners. The awards recognise outstanding achievement, dedication and professional growth, as well as the commitment of employers who go above and beyond to support their apprentices.

Apprenticeship Week 2026 not only celebrated success but also reaffirmed the College’s commitment to delivering exceptional training pathways that meet the evolving needs of industry. By working closely with employers and championing learner achievement, North Devon College continues to empower apprentices to build confidence, gain sought-after skills and realise their career ambitions.

As the week draws to a close, the College extends its congratulations to all apprentices and employer partners who make these opportunities possible – and looks forward to another year of growth, collaboration and success.

North Devon College is proud to announce the outstanding success of our first NHS Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP), delivered in partnership with the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)/Jobcentre Plus.

This collaborative initiative was designed to support individuals into meaningful employment within the NHS, and the results have been truly inspiring.

Throughout the programme, every participant successfully achieved a BTEC Introductory Award in Health and Social Care with learners benefitting from tailored support, valuable industry insights, and practical preparation for NHS roles.

This programme has demonstrated the power of partnership working between education, employment services, and the healthcare sector. Together, we have opened doors for individuals who may not have previously considered careers within health and social care, and this is just the beginning.

North Devon College extends heartfelt thanks to all involved, with special recognition to Emma Sojitra, whose dedication and delivery played a key role in making this initiative such a success.

We are incredibly proud of our learners for their commitment, determination, and achievements, and look forward to building on this success with future programmes.

A huge thank you also goes to our partners at the NHS and DWP for their collaboration and ongoing support.

Year 2 Foundation Degree Creative Media students have embarked on an exciting new project, diving headfirst into the production of their short film The Influence. The film explores the profound impact of social media on mental health, a topic that resonates deeply in today’s digital age.

The students are taking a hands-on approach, sharing responsibilities across all key production roles. From scripting and directing to videography, lighting and audio production, the crew is experiencing the full scope of professional filmmaking.

“This project has allowed our students to bring an important issue to light while honing their skills in a real-world production environment, taking on the key roles that they would like to specialise in and collaborate as they would in industry” said Billy Bailey, Programme Manager for Creative Media Production & Technology.

With a collaborative spirit and creative drive, the students aim to deliver a compelling narrative that challenges audiences to reflect on their own digital habits and mental well-being. The Influence promises to be a thoughtful exploration of a timely topic.

Stay tuned for updates as the students bring their vision to life.
