Students are already reaping the benefits of an exciting transformation to the college’s Sports Hall, following a significant investment in the facilities they use every day.

The upgraded space has been designed with performance, learning and progression in mind – creating an environment where students can train harder, develop their skills and push their potential even further. Sports students were the first to experience the revitalised hall, stepping into a modern, high-quality setting that reflects the college’s commitment to excellence.

The Sports Hall can be used for a variety of games due to its multi-use design, with everything from badminton to ball games with a full size climbing wall at the back. The new colour scheme creates an enhanced experience by making small balls and shuttlecocks easier to see and a new springy floor for more height on those volleys.

Level 1 and Level 2 Site Carpentry students are currently constructing plywood and fibreglass boats as part of their Skills Boost and work experience programme.

Working with materials supplied by Jewson, one of the UK’s leading timber suppliers, students are benefiting from access to high-quality resources as well as valuable insight into current industry standards. The partnership ensures that learners are not only building their technical abilities, but also gaining an understanding of professional practices and expectations within the construction sector.

Throughout the project, students are applying a wide range of carpentry skills, from measuring and cutting to assembling and finishing, all while working collaboratively to bring their boats to life. The addition of fibreglass elements introduces learners to new materials and techniques, further enhancing their skillset.

The project will conclude in an exciting sea trial at Westward Ho! Sea Pool, where students will have the opportunity to test their finished boats on the water. This final stage provides a rewarding and memorable conclusion to their hard work, as well as a chance to reflect on the success of their builds.

Lecturers have praised the project for its ability to engage learners and build confidence, while strengthening links between education and industry. By working on a live, practical brief in partnership with a recognised supplier, students are gaining meaningful experience that will support their progression into careers within the construction industry.

Stay tuned for more updates on the project as it progresses.

Eighteen Health & Social Care students have returned from an unforgettable two-week educational visit to Budapest, where learning and cultural discovery went hand in hand.

From the moment they arrived, students embraced every opportunity to explore the vibrant Hungarian capital. Travelling by tram and boat, and clocking up an impressive 18,000 steps across Buda and Pest on their very first day, the group demonstrated energy, curiosity, and a real enthusiasm for new experiences.

A key focus of the trip was to broaden students’ understanding of international health and social care systems. Through visits to a range of healthcare, childcare, and residential settings, students gained valuable insight into how services are delivered in Hungary, comparing practices and approaches with those in the UK. These first-hand experiences have helped deepen their knowledge and will support their future careers in the sector.

Beyond their professional learning, students also immersed themselves in the rich culture and unique attractions of the city. Highlights included relaxing in Budapest’s famous thermal baths, exploring underground caves, and even encountering some unexpected local residents – including pygmy pigs.

The trip provided an ideal balance of education and adventure, allowing students to build confidence, independence, and a global perspective. Staff praised the group for their excellent behaviour, engagement, and willingness to step outside their comfort zones.

This memorable visit to Budapest will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group (ENDC) is proud to support Colleges Week 2026, a national campaign led by the Association of Colleges that celebrates the crucial role of colleges, and how they are equipping young people and adults with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed.

During Colleges Week, MPs from across Devon showed their support for further education in the region and how the newly formed Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group, comprising Exeter College and North Devon College in Barnstaple, is delivering skills training for young people and adults.

John Laramy CBE DL, ENDC Group Principal and CEO, met with Steve Race, MP for Exeter, and David Reed, MP for Exmouth and Exeter East, while Jade Otty, ENDC Group Deputy Principal and CEO, met with Ian Roome, MP for North Devon, with each MP supporting the College Group’s ambition.

As well as A Levels and GCSEs, the Colleges offer T Levels, apprenticeships and vocational courses. These more practical courses have a strong focus on skills and offer industry-aligned pathways for people of all ages.

Both Colleges are investing in facilities that will enhance skills in their communities and support employers’ needs. This includes the development of a new hospital training ward at Exeter College, designed to give learners a realistic environment to build essential skills for the health and care workforce.

By merging Exeter College and North Devon College are bringing together shared expertise and resources, forming a regional powerhouse for young people and skills.

John Laramy CBE DL, Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group CEO and Principal, said:

“We’re delighted to support Colleges Week and the role further education plays in shaping people’s futures here in the South West, and across the UK.

“This year’s Colleges Week theme is ‘Skills for All’, and that encapsulates a big part of what we’re doing at Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group. Our aim is to create a regional

powerhouse for young people and skills, and by working together, we can enhance opportunities for learners and offer better access to exceptional skills training.”

Ian Roome, Member of Parliament for North Devon, said:

“It was great to meet Jade as North Devon College’s new Senior Leader, and to hear more about the College’s plans for the months ahead.

North Devon College plays a vital role in building skills for our area, supporting local employers and opening doors for people of all ages. And I want to join them in celebrating Colleges Week 2026.

Thank you to the brilliant staff, students, and leaders who make such a difference in North Devon!”

Bringing space down to earth, the A Level team showcased an exciting Space Exhibition exploring how scientists study the Moon, uncover evidence about its origins, and use real scientific investigation to drive space research.
The exhibition welcomed visiting pupils from Sticklepath Primary SchoolԻBishop’s Tawton Primary School, who spent the day exploring the fascinating world of lunar and space science. From examining space-related samples to discovering how scientists learn more about the Moon, pupils were encouraged to get curious, ask questions and explore new ideas.
A collection of space materials, on loan through a national space science programme, gave pupils a rare chance to engage with real scientific resources and see how evidence is used to understand our universe. Hands-on activities and interactive displays helped bring complex ideas to life, making science feel accessible, exciting and relevant.
North Devon College’s A Level students played a central role in the day, welcoming visitors, explaining concepts and sharing their enthusiasm for the subject. Acting as guides throughout the exhibition, they helped younger learners navigate the displays while developing their own confidence, communication and leadership skills.
Staff were impressed by the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the visiting pupils, whose thoughtful questions and excitement made the day a pleasure to host. North Devon College would like to thank everyone involved in making the exhibition such a success, with special thanks to the A Level students whose energy and professionalism helped create a memorable experience for all.

Students from North Devon College’s Outdoor Adventure and Public Services programmes are gaining unforgettable international experiences as part of an exciting two-week Turing Scheme-funded trip to Les Orres in the French Alps.
The overseas residential blends skill development, cultural immersion and employability-focused learning, giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves in a world-class mountain environment while building confidence, resilience and teamwork.
During week one, students are based at UCPA (Union des Centres de Plein Air), a French government-backed scheme specialising in adventurous activities. Staying in hostel-style accommodation, learners are introduced to alpine life while receiving professional instruction in skiing, many for the first time. The intensive programme allows students to develop technical skills quickly while adapting to new surroundings and routines.
In week two, the group moves into self-catered accommodation, encouraging greater independence and responsibility. The programme broadens to include a diverse mix of activities such as two days of snowshoeing, a full day of ice climbing, additional skiing practice, and valuable hotel and chalet-based work experience. This combination supports both practical outdoor leadership skills and real-world insight into the hospitality and tourism sectors.
Staff leading the trip praised the students’ enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the experience, highlighting how the visit directly supports course outcomes while bringing classroom learning to life. Our Public Services lecturer Matt said “Our ski trip challenged students to build real outdoor leadership – developing resilience, teamwork, navigation skills, and confidence in the mountains. These winter adventures don’t just create memories; they lay the foundation for future outdoor instructors ready to guide, inspire, and thrive in any environment.”
This is just one example of the ambitious, career-focused opportunities that prepare students for further study and employment – at home and abroad.

Tuesday 6 January marks the start of a new term for students — and a significant milestone for education in the region as North Devon College officially begins its journey as part of the newly formed Exeter and North Devon Colleges (ENDC) Group.

Formerly known as Ƶ, the College begins 2026 with a new name, a stronger position and a clear ambition: to deliver even greater opportunities for learners, staff, employers and communities across North Devon.

The formation of the ENDC Group follows the successful merger with Exeter College, approved after extensive public consultation. The merger brings together two renowned tertiary colleges with a shared commitment to delivering high-quality education, skills development and positive community impact.

As part of a large, place-based college group, North Devon College is better positioned to expand progression routes, strengthen A Level and apprenticeship pathways, deepen employer partnerships and invest sustainably in staff, facilities and learner support.

Alongside the launch of the new Group, Jade Otty, Group Deputy Chief Executive Officer will also take on the role of Senior Leader for North Devon College. Jade Otty, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group and Senior Leader for North Devon College said “It’s a real privilege to lead North Devon College at such an important moment in its journey. I’m excited to build on the fantastic progress already made by the team, ensuring every learner can succeed and enjoy an exceptional learning experience here in North Devon.”

For current students, learning will continue as normal at their existing campuses, while the College begins unlocking the wider benefits of being part of the new Group.

With the start of the new term, North Devon College enters a new era — building on its strengths, embracing new opportunities and shaping a bright future for our learners and our local communities!
