Four of our Chemistry students earned national recognition recently in the esteemed Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, a rigorous competition designed for Year 12 and first year college students across the UK. Out of six participants representing the school, four achieved certificates, two Gold, one Silver, and one Copper, a remarkable result in this prestigious annual event.

The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is known for its challenging questions that go beyond the A-level syllabus, testing problem-solving ability, chemical insight, and creativity.

Earning a certificate in this competition is a significant accomplishment, with the Gold award placing students among the top performers nationally.

In addition to the four who received certificates, the remaining two students narrowly missed out on the Copper award by just a single mark, highlighting the overall strength and dedication of our team.

North Devon College Chemistry Lecturer, Mark Rivers praised the students’ efforts, saying “This is a truly outstanding performance. The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge demands a deep understanding of chemistry and the ability to apply it in unfamiliar contexts. Our students should be extremely proud of their achievement.”

Congratulations to all six participants for their hard work and impressive results in this highly competitive examination!

  • Stanners Gym was recognised for boosting one intern’s confidence and helping them identify a potential career in fitness.
  • Vista Wellbeing CIC was praised for its inclusive approach, offering meaningful experiences and a clear progression route for one of the interns.

“This was our first celebration of the Supported Internship Programme”, said Hayley Willison, Supported Internship Programme Manager. “I wanted to give students and families a special way to mark the end of their time at North Devon College. It’s more than just certificates, it’s about recognising their growth, saying thank you to the employers, and building relationships for future placements across North Devon.

With overwhelmingly positive feedback from businesses; many already keen to work with North Devon College again, the Supported Internship Programme is growing and North Devon College hopes the event inspires more employers to come on board and open new opportunities for students across the region in years to come.

North Devon College A level student, Kiah, is celebrating an incredible run of achievements, both on and off the stage. A multi-talented student, Kiah recently helped lead her dance troupe at UDC to a national championship title with a powerful, polished routine that captivated judges and secured the top spot.

Kiah, who has been dancing since the age of six, returned to competitive dance three years ago and hasn’t looked back. Her dedication, discipline, and flair were on full display at the UDC nationals, where her troupe’s routine earned standing ovations and the coveted title.

But her talents don’t stop at the dance floor. Kiah is also a vital part of the undefeated North Devon College Netball Team, which has held its unbeaten record for an incredible two years running.ÌęCurrently studying Biology, Geography and Sport, Kiah has already received an offer to study Applied Anatomy at the University of Bristol. Her long-term goal? A career in either dentistry or Pathology, a testament to her passion for science and helping others.

With drive, determination, and a future full of promise, Kiah is certainly one to watch and an inspiration to us all at North Devon College. We can’t wait to hear more as Kiah progresses to her next adventure – Look out for more!

The annual North Devon College Apprenticeship & T Level Awards ceremony once again took place at The Taw Restaurant on the Barnstaple Campus on Thursday, 6 February 2025, celebrating the outstanding achievements of apprentices, T Level students and their dedicated employers.

ÌęThe event recognised the hard work and commitment of those who made significant contributions to the North Devon College apprenticeship program in 2024 into 2025. The ceremony brought together students, industry professionals and educational leaders to acknowledge the skills, dedication and innovation demonstrated by apprentices and T Level learners.

ÌęThe North Devon College Apprenticeship & T Level Awards featured categories highlighting excellence in various areas, from apprentice of the year to both large and small business of the year and many more.

The awards ceremony also included an incredible celebratory lunch, prepared and served by Hospitality and Catering students followed by an opportunity for networking and appreciation of the invaluable role apprentices and employers play in strengthening the local workforce.

ÌęReflecting on the awards ceremony and looking forward, Interim Principal, Kurt Hintz, said “The awards ceremony was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our apprentices, T Level students and the support of our employer partners. Apprenticeships and T Levels are crucial for equipping young people in the region with the skills needed for successful careers, and we are proud to celebrate their hard work. This was a great opportunity to showcase apprenticeships leading into National Apprenticeship Week beginning on the 10th of February where we will be launching our “100 Apprenticeships In 100 Days” initiative at our employer breakfast event. This aims to turbo charge the volume of apprenticeships offered in the region so that many more young people can access this vital training route in coming months”.

ÌęAs one of the key events in North Devon College’s academic calendar, this ceremony not only celebrated individual success but also reinforced our college’s commitment to vocational education and industry collaboration.
