North Devon College’s Barnstaple campus is celebrating a landmark year for its construction department, with record numbers of students enrolling across bricklaying, carpentry, and multi-trade pathways. This remarkable growth reflects the increasing demand for skilled trades and North Devon College’s strong reputation for delivering high-quality vocational education.

In particular, enrolments on Level 1 courses are at an all-time high, with learners eager to take their first steps toward careers in construction. To ensure every student can learn comfortably and safely, North Devon College has expanded and adapted its facilities, with new and refurbished workshop spaces across the campus. Purpose-built areas now provide the tools, equipment, and supportive environment needed to accommodate the surge in learners.

The construction department has also introduced streamlined timetables, ensuring a smooth flow to the learning day without unnecessary gaps. This new structure keeps students focused and engaged, while creating clear progression routes from Level 1 through to Level 3, with direct pathways into apprenticeships and employment.

“Our facilities are fantastic, and our expectations for both learners and staff are aspirational,” said Tony Griffin, Head of Construction. “We’ve invested in new resources and created an environment where students can thrive, whether they’re just starting out or preparing to enter the workforce.”

This year’s growth in construction enrolment is more than just numbers—it’s a powerful sign of North Devon College’s commitment to inclusive, career-focused education. With more learners than ever choosing construction, the future looks bright for both students and the local industry.

North Devon College is celebrating a record increase in the number of students enrolling in our construction courses this year, a clear sign of the growing enthusiasm for the industry in the region.

With this impressive rise in admissions, students are clearly eager to learn key skills such as carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing and electrical. The surge comes at a crucial time for North Devon, where demand for skilled construction professionals is rising, driven by exciting new housing and infrastructure projects across the area.

While the increase in student numbers is a positive development, North Devon College is now focusing on finding new local employers to help these students gain the practical experience they need through apprenticeships. The college recognises that hands-on experience is a vital part of their student’s journey, and they are optimistic that the local business community will step up to provide the necessary support. With such a high demand for skilled labour, apprenticeships present an excellent opportunity for companies to train the next generation of professionals while benefiting from their enthusiasm and fresh ideas.

In light of this, we are inviting any local employers in the region to reach out to us, and we encourage you to consider taking on an apprentice. By offering apprenticeships, businesses can play a vital role in developing local talent and securing a strong workforce for the future.

Employers interested in supporting these students are invited to contact us to explore how they can be part of this positive movement. Please contact ourBusiness Engagement Team on01271 852407 or by emailingbusiness@petroc.ac.uk. You can also find out more on the apprenticeship page of our website.
